About this book

Sixty real Japanese islands — and every one of them ready to color.

This book travels Japan by ferry, from Rishiri-Fuji rising straight out of the northern sea to Yonaguni, the last island before Taiwan. Every stop is a real island with a real life of its own: the kelp racks and ferry quay of Rishiri; Sado, the great gold island; the hidden-Christian ports of the Goto chain; Yakushima's cloud-forest shore; the Kerama blue of Tokashiki and Zamami; Taketomi's red roofs and water-buffalo carts; the volcano ports of the Izu Islands a day — or an hour — from Tokyo; and the shrine island of Miyajima in the calm Inland Sea.

Every subject appears as a two-page spread: on one side, a full-color photo guide with a short, fascinating story — the island's history, its food, its festivals, and what to look for while you color — and on the other, a detailed coloring page of the very same view, converted from the real photograph so the island you color is the island itself. A guide at the front shows you how to print only the coloring pages at home and save your color ink.

Inside you will find: • Hokkaido's offshore islands and the Sea of Japan — Rishiri, Rebun, Okushiri, Teuri, Yagishiri, Sado and the Oki Islands • Kyushu's island chains — Iki, Tsushima, the Goto Islands, Hirado, Amakusa and Nagashima • The southern seas — Yakushima, Tanegashima, the Amami chain, Okinawa, the Kerama and Yaeyama islands • Tokyo's far islands and the Inland Sea — the Izu and Ogasawara islands, Shodoshima, Awaji, Miyajima and Naoshima • 60 full-color photo guides with the story of each island (about 80–100 words each) • None of these sixty subjects appeared in our previous Japan coloring books

Sixty islands, one long voyage from the snow country to the southern sea — bring pencils, and take your time.
