About this book
Japanese Workbook Vol.25: News, Media & Entertainment Japanese — The Japanese of Headlines, Broadcasts and Stories
The headline you must read through to the article. The weather bulletin you must hear exactly before the washing goes out. The final episode the whole family talks about at dinner. The rumour you must check against its source before you pass it on. If the news, the newspaper, the television, the radio and the bookshop are part of your life in Japan, this is the Japanese that life runs on — and it cannot be improvised at the breakfast table.
Part 1 — 300 practical expressions in 20 scene groups Following the news, newspapers and the morning paper, television news and live coverage, weather bulletins and disaster information on air, radio letters and requests, magazines and weeklies, books and bestsellers, films as works, TV drama and variety, music media, anime and manga in the media, sports coverage, interviews and press conferences, advertising, online buzz, checking the facts, talking programmes over, reviews and recommendations, viewing habits, and the media year. Every expression includes its reading, romaji, English meaning, a usage note (the scene, the care to take, the rule to remember, the words to confirm), three example sentences in Japanese and English, and a ruled practice space for three sentences of your own.
Part 2 — 12 writing tasks in three stages Short notes (asking family to record a programme, recommending a programme to a friend, a request letter to a radio programme, an impression of a film for a friend), messages that handle a situation (an opinion to a newspaper's letters column, an opinion to the broadcaster, an answer to an interview request, a favourite book in the local newsletter), and full written pieces (a week of news looked back over, a favourite programme introduced, a small article on a local story, a year of films and books) — each with a model answer that really uses this volume's expressions, a self-check list and a full writing grid.
Part 3 — 12 readings on news and media Reading headlines and articles, how forecasts are told, the programme guide, the letters column, film criticism, letters and requests to radio, correction articles and apologies, making interview articles, how bestsellers work and the obi, the words of play-by-play and commentary, advertising labels and rules, and the year-end and New Year specials — each with a full translation, five key words and three comprehension questions.
Series integrity: zero overlap, no exceptions All 300 expressions and all 12 reading titles were checked item by item against everything in Vol.1–Vol.24 (9,300 headwords and 288 reading titles): overlap zero. Across the twenty-five volumes you now train 4,200 words, 300 sentence patterns, 5,100 practical expressions and 300 readings. One honest note: broadcast rules, programme formats and customs differ by station, paper and region — this book teaches you to say so and to confirm, and it is a language workbook, not a manual of journalism or criticism: it teaches you to follow, to check and to talk, and leaves the reporting and the reviewing to their makers.
For learners who have finished Vol.1–Vol.24 or who already read and write Japanese at an advanced level — and above all for anyone whose home in Japan runs on the news, the paper, the screen and the radio.
